What is an entitlement?

Entitlement

An entitlement is a level of access, such as pro, that a customer gets by buying one or more products. Your app asks whether the entitlement is active instead of checking product IDs, so a monthly plan, a yearly plan and a lifetime purchase can give the same access, and you can add products without shipping an app update.

The word is used two ways. In StoreKit 2, current entitlements are the transactions that are giving a customer access right now. In RevenueCat's model, an entitlement is your own named access level that products attach to. Most apps have one, for example pro. If you sell two tiers, such as Gold and Platinum, you have two. A customer's entitlements are shared across all apps in the same project, so a purchase on iOS can give access on Android and the web.

Check the entitlement in your code and never a product ID. That is what lets you add a yearly plan, a Google Play product or a lifetime purchase later with no app change. Treat an expired entitlement as inactive by comparing its expiry with the server time, and remember that refunds, grace periods and promotional grants change the end date.

RevenueDot decides each entitlement from every purchase the customer owns. A subscription's access ends at the refund time if refunded, else at the end of the grace period if the store gave one, else at the store's expiry. A lifetime purchase wins over everything unless refunded. Otherwise the purchase that ends last wins. Consumables never grant an entitlement, and expired entitlements stay listed with their expires_date.

FAQ

Entitlement: questions people ask

What is the difference between a product and an entitlement?

A product is one thing a store sells, such as pro_monthly. An entitlement is the access it grants, such as pro. Many products can grant one entitlement.

Yes. Attach the monthly, yearly and lifetime products to pro, and any of them grants it.

What happens to an entitlement after a refund?

Access ends at the refund time, even if the paid period had not finished.
