What is a subscription group?

Subscription group

A subscription group is an App Store container for the auto-renewable subscriptions of one service, such as monthly and yearly Pro. A customer can hold only one subscription in a group at a time, and moving between its levels is an upgrade, a downgrade or a crossgrade. An introductory offer can be used once per group.

Apple requires every auto-renewable subscription to belong to a group and to have a level inside it. You rank the subscriptions from the one that offers the most (level 1) to the one that offers the least, and you can put equal plans on the same level. Apple's advice is a single group for most apps, because people can buy only one subscription in a group and the group prevents accidental double purchases. If your app sells separate services, such as two streaming channels, use one group per service. Customers with subscriptions in two groups are billed separately for each.

The group also controls offers and revenue. Each person can redeem one introductory offer per group, even if several products in the group have one. Days of paid service, which decide when Apple's 85% rate starts, are counted per group.

Google Play has no group. A single subscription product holds several base plans, and plan changes work through replacement modes. In RevenueDot a package in an offering holds one product per app, so the group matters only when you create products in App Store Connect. RevenueDot can create the subscription and reuse a group by name.

FAQ

Subscription group: questions people ask

How many subscription groups should my app have?

One, unless you sell separate services that a customer may want to buy at the same time. Apple names a single group as the best practice for most apps.

Can I move a subscription to a different group later?

Plan this before you launch. Moving products changes how upgrades, crossgrades and introductory offer eligibility work, so test it in the sandbox before you change a live group.

Does Google Play have subscription groups?

No. Google Play puts base plans and offers under one subscription product, and customers switch plans with a replacement mode.
