What is a CONSUMPTION_REQUEST?

CONSUMPTION_REQUEST

CONSUMPTION_REQUEST is an App Store Server Notification that Apple sends when a customer asks for a refund. It asks your server for consumption data, such as how much of the purchase the customer used. If the customer agreed to share it, you answer within 12 hours through the Send Consumption Information endpoint of the App Store Server API.

Apple uses your answer as one of several inputs when it decides the refund, so a good answer can reduce wrongful refunds. The request covers any product type: consumable, non-consumable, non-renewing subscription and auto-renewable subscription. Your answer includes whether the customer consented, how much they consumed, whether you delivered the product, the account age, the total spent and refunded in USD, the platform, play time, whether you offered a free sample, the user status and your refund preference. Apple currently documents two versions of the endpoint, and the older V1 version is still documented.

Consent is the part to get right. Apple says you are solely responsible for obtaining valid consent before you share a customer's data, and if the customer did not consent you must not respond. Put the sharing in your terms or privacy policy, and keep a record of it. The deadline is firm: respond within 12 hours of the notification.

RevenueDot's Refund Control sends the answer for you, using ordered policies on customer conditions such as first purchase date, platform or recent renewal. It builds the request from its own records, sends nothing until you confirm customer consent, retries after 5 minutes, 15 minutes and then hourly, and stops 5 minutes before the 12-hour deadline. Apple's REFUND and REFUND_DECLINED notifications then show the outcome.
