Active Trials: How Many Free Trials Are Running Right Now

Active trials is the number of free trials with access at the end of each period, whatever their auto-renew state. A trial that is set to cancel still counts until it ends. It is a snapshot, not a total over the period, and it rises when new trials start faster than old ones end.

Definition

How RevenueDot calculates Active Trials

RevenueDot builds subscriptions from the transaction ledger. A subscription whose current period is a free trial and has not ended at the end of the period counts as one active trial. The count includes trials with auto-renew on, auto-renew off and a billing issue. The current period is measured now, and it is marked incomplete.

A trial leaves the count when it converts to a paid period or ends without converting. A refund ends access at the refund time. Granted access and Family Sharing are excluded, and so is the sandbox, unless you turn the sandbox switch on. Filters and segments: app, store, product, product duration, offering, country, platform and app version.

Choose Subscription Status with the measure set to Active Trials to split the same number into set to renew, set to cancel and billing issue. You can open it in the dashboard under Charts or fetch it with GET /v2/projects/{project_id}/charts/trials. The response has the same shape as RevenueCat's Charts API, so scripts written for that API keep working. The secret key needs the charts_metrics:charts:read permission. The Charts guide lists every parameter.

Why it matters

What Active Trials tells you

Active trials is your pipeline of future subscribers. If it is steady or growing, new paid subscriptions follow in the next trial length. If it drops, expect a dip in new subscribers one trial later, before any paid chart shows it.

Multiply it by your trial conversion rate for a quick estimate of the subscribers coming in. Use the Trials Movement chart to see whether a change is driven by more starts or by more trials ending.

How to read it

  • Read it as a stock, not a flow. Daily values are not added together.
  • A spike after a promotion fades one trial length later. That is normal.
  • Compare it with New Trials. Active trials growing while new trials are flat means trials are ending more slowly, for example after a longer trial test.
  • Segment by product duration when you run two trial lengths, since a 14 day trial stays in the count twice as long as a 7 day one.
  • Use the sandbox switch to check your own test trials without mixing them with real ones.

FAQ

Active Trials: questions people ask

What counts as an active trial?

A free trial with access at the end of the period. It counts whether auto-renew is on, off or in a billing retry, and it stops counting when it converts or ends.

Does a cancelled trial still count as active?

Yes. A trial set to cancel keeps access until it ends, so it stays in the count until then.

How do I see how many active trials will renew?

Open Subscription Status and choose Active Trials. It splits the trials into set to renew, set to cancel and billing issue.

Is this the same as new trials?

No. New Trials counts trials that started in the period. Active Trials is how many are running at the end of it.
