What is the Google Play Billing Library?
Google Play Billing Library
The Google Play Billing Library is the Android library that connects your app to Google Play's billing system. It loads product details, launches the purchase flow, reports the result and lets you acknowledge or consume purchases. As of October 2026, new apps and updates must use version 8 or later, and an extension runs to November 1, 2026.
Google pairs the library with a backend integration. The app uses the library for the purchase flow, and your server uses the Google Play Developer API and real-time developer notifications to manage purchases, with Cloud Pub/Sub carrying the notifications. Google calls the backend essential for efficient and secure purchase management and for entitlements that work across platforms.
Every version has a two-year deprecation cycle, with a deadline for new apps and updates and a later extension deadline. The current rule is version 8 or later by August 31, 2026, with an extension available until November 1, 2026. Check the deprecation page before each release, because the minimum moves every year.
For testing, Google recommends license testers and Play Billing Lab. For payment problems, the library can show an in-app message with showInAppMessages when a payment fails or a price increase is waiting. The RevenueCat Android SDK uses the library in your app and posts the purchase token to RevenueDot, which reads the purchase from the Play Developer API and acknowledges it within Google's 3-day limit.
