What is Family Sharing for in-app purchases?

Family Sharing

Family Sharing is an Apple feature that lets a customer share an auto-renewable subscription or a non-consumable purchase with up to five family members across their Apple devices. The developer turns it on per product in App Store Connect, and once it is on it cannot be turned off. Each family member gets their own receipts and transactions.

You enable Family Sharing for each product in App Store Connect, and customers choose whether to share. Each family member's transaction carries an ownership type that tells you whether the person bought the product or received it through sharing. You process shared purchases the same way as normal ones, and you must handle a family member losing access. Apple sends a REVOKE notification to your server then. A first-time shared subscription arrives as SUBSCRIBED, and a shared non-consumable arrives as ONE_TIME_CHARGE.

Because family members do not pay, shared access should not count as revenue. A subscription that is shared can also change your subscriber counts, so decide whether you count family members as subscribers.

RevenueDot stores the ownership type, and it excludes Family Sharing purchases from every money and subscription chart, so MRR and active subscriptions count only the people who pay.
